“Do you believe the Master Chief succeeded because he was, at his core, broken?”
I’ve written… a fair amount about Halo 4 over the years.
I forged my place in the community as a loud voice of positivity for this game after its release. I have penned tens of thousands of words about its storytelling, its characterisation, its themes.
The year is 2021, and I’m still not done. I still have more to say about it because its themes are so rich. Theme is the ‘soul’ of a work, the connective tissue between everything, and at the end it’s the main thing I want to talk about – putting the pieces together, exploring what it all meant.
So let’s dive once more into the depths of Halo 4.

“She is stubborn, brilliant as a nova, dark as a singularity.”
The forces of antagonism in the Halo universe are among some of the most memorable (and quotable) in gaming.
From the soft-spoken machinations of the Prophet of Truth in Halo 2, to Atriox crushing some of the most powerful symbols of the series in his fist – these are characters you don’t soon forget.
Halo 4, however, rather spectacularly buries the lede here. It has become clear that the greatest threat faced not only by humanity, but the galaxy itself, is not an all-consuming parasite, or an army of warmongering mercenaries, or even the Didact himself…
It’s the Librarian.

The Didact did not die at the end of Halo 4.
The Didact did not die during the events of Halo: Escalation.
Contrary to the impression many have, he is, in fact, still out there… somewhere. Where is he? What’s become of him? When might we see him next, and how might he return?

We last saw the Didact in the The Next 72 Hours arc of Halo: Escalation, which, puzzlingly, concluded with him being Composed – despite stating in one of Halo 4’s Terminals that it would not work on him.
With his future uncertain, I thought it’d be interesting to reconcile this apparent contradiction and find a satisfying answer to why the Didact can be Composed, and why his probable absence in Infinite might be a good thing for fans of the character.

Here we are, at the fifth and final story of this little project. This has been a really fun exercise in mixing various critiques I’ve made of Halo 5 over the last three years with more creative expression, writing scenes I’d have loved to see and expanding on some of the ideas found throughout the campaign and […]

The Ur-Didact was, as we all know, the central antagonist in Halo 4’s story. The insane Warrior-Servant manipulated John and Cortana into opening up his Cryptum to release him after 100,000 years of imprisonment and that enabled him to pursue his agenda of upholding his twisted version of the Mantle of Responsibility. He believes that […]
